The Canadian Firearms Safety Course is the first step in getting your Possession and Acquisition Licence (Also Known As: a Firearms Licence). It is also the prerequisite for the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course.
Your Possession and Acquisition Licence, or PAL, allows you to purchase and or possess non-restricted firearms and ammunition. You must show this licence whenever you attempt to purchase ammunition or a firearm. You must also present this licence to a police officer upon demand if you have a firearm in your possession. Furthermore, should you borrow or be given a firearm, you must have a PAL.
The Canadian Firearms Safety Course, or CFSC, is a basic course. The knowledge you will acquire in this course will ensure that you have the basic knowledge of safe handling, storage, display and transportation of firearms. Should you wish to develop your skills further BC Firearms Training (AKA Skolrood Firearms) encourages you to seek out more advanced classes. We can assist you or give you one on one instruction.
The CFSC is between 8 to 12 hours. It is usually taught on a Saturday but may carry over to Sunday (other arrangements can be made). There is a written test and the student must also demonstrate safe handling skills with real (deactivated) firearms, and inert ammunition. Should you fail the course, you are required by law to re-attend on a different day to re-test. Re-testing will involve an additional fee. Successful candidates who have also signed up for the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course, or CRFSC, will carry on and complete their training on the Sunday which will conclude with another written test and another practical test.
